Walker, rollator or walking stick: how to choose for an older family member

By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 2 min read

Choosing a walking aid for a parent or grandparent can feel confusing. The right aid depends on how much weight the person needs to put through it, how steady their balance is, and where they will use it.

The four options

Aid Support Best for
Walking stick Light Mild balance trouble, steadiness outdoors
Quad stick (four prongs) Moderate Needs a wider, steadier base than a single stick
Frame walker without wheels High and stable Indoor walking, strong need for support after surgery
Rollator (four wheels) Moderate, rolls People who can walk but tire, and need a seat or backrest

Walking stick

The Humable Walking Stick is lightweight and height adjustable, with an anatomical handle and anti-slip grip. Hold it on the side opposite the weaker leg, so the stick shares the load as you step.

Quad stick

The Assistive Walking Sticks have four prongs for extra base stability, an anatomical grip and adjustable height. They stand up on their own and give a wider base than a single tip.

Frame walker without wheels

This lightweight aluminium frame walker gives firm support for each step and folds for storage. Because it has no wheels it stays where you put it, which makes it very stable, but the person lifts it forward with each step. It suits indoor use.

Rollator

The Humable Rollator is a lightweight aluminium four-wheeled walker with PVC down-to-brake wheels and a curved padded backrest. It rolls easily, so the person must be able to control the brakes and keep up with its speed. The brakes work by pressing down on the handles.

Set the height right

Stand tall in your usual shoes with the aid beside you. The handle should sit at about wrist height, so your elbow is slightly bent, about 20 to 30 degrees, when you hold it.

Ask a physiotherapist

A physiotherapist can assess balance and strength, and tell you which aid is safest and how to use it. This matters most after a fall, surgery or stroke.

Before you buy

Check the weight limit, the folded size, and whether the aid fits through your doorways. Message us for the weight limits and dimensions of any Humable aid.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for an elderly person, a rollator or a walker?

A frame walker without wheels is more stable but must be lifted with each step. A rollator rolls and has brakes, but the person needs enough control to use it safely. A physiotherapist can advise.

What is a quad walking stick?

A stick with four prongs at the base, which gives a wider and steadier base than a single tip.

What height should a walking stick be?

Set it so your elbow is slightly bent, about 20 to 30 degrees, when you hold the handle, standing tall in your usual shoes.

Which hand should I hold a walking stick in?

Usually the hand opposite the weaker or operated leg. Your physiotherapist can confirm what is right for you.

What is the weight limit of these aids?

Message us on WhatsApp before ordering and we will confirm the limit for the aid you choose.
