Walker boot guide: what it is for and how to walk in it
By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 2 min read
A walker boot is a protective boot that holds the foot and ankle in place while the injury recovers, and lets you walk with more confidence than a cast would. It is used for conditions such as cracked toes, ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, broken feet, pressure fractures and Achilles tendon injuries, when a doctor advises it.
Long or short?
A long (tall) boot supports the lower leg as well as the ankle and is used when more of the leg needs protection. A short boot supports the ankle and foot and leaves the leg freer. Your doctor will say which you need.
With or without air?
The versions with air cushioning, the Long Walker Boot with Air and the Short Walker Boot with Air, add air cushioning to help spread pressure under the foot. The Long Walker Boot has foam lining. All are ultra-light and have adjustable straps.
How to put it on
- Sit down and open all the straps
- Wear a clean, dry sock
- Slide your foot in with the heel at the back of the boot
- Fasten the straps from the bottom upward so they are snug but not tight
- Check you can wiggle your toes and the heel does not lift
How to walk in it
- Follow your doctor’s advice on how much weight to put on the foot
- Take smaller, steady steps and look ahead
- Wear a shoe of similar height on the other foot to keep your hips level
- Take extra care on stairs and wet floors
Looking after your skin
Check your skin each day for redness or sore spots, keep the liner dry and remove the boot only when your doctor says you may.
How long?
This is the doctor’s decision. It depends on the injury and how it is recovering, and the length of time can differ widely.
Call your doctor if
- Pain increases or the foot swells a lot
- The foot becomes numb, cold or discoloured
- The boot rubs and breaks the skin
Sizing
Available in S, M, L and XL. Measure the length of your foot and ask us if you are between sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What is a walker boot used for?
It protects the foot and ankle while you walk during recovery from injuries such as fractures, severe sprains, plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendon injuries, when a doctor advises it.
How long do I wear a walker boot?
Your doctor decides, depending on the injury and how it is recovering.
Can I sleep in a walker boot?
Only if your doctor says so.
Why should I wear a matching shoe on the other foot?
The boot adds height. A shoe of similar height keeps your hips level and prevents back and hip strain.
What is the difference between the long and short walker boots?
The long boot supports the lower leg as well as the ankle. The short boot supports the ankle and foot and leaves the leg freer.
