Arm sling, sling and swathe, or shoulder wrap: which one?

By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 2 min read

After a shoulder or arm injury, or after surgery, you may be told to use a sling. The word covers several different supports. Here is how they differ.

Comfort Arm Sling

An arm sling cradles the forearm and hand so the weight is carried by the shoulder strap instead of the injured arm. A thumb loop helps prevent wrist drop, and a hook closure at the top of the sling pouch keeps it secure. It is used with casts and with injuries to the arm, wrist or hand. Humable’s Comfort Arm Sling comes in sizes S to XL.

Comfort Sling & Swathe

This adds a swathe, a body strap that holds the arm against the body. It is used when the shoulder itself needs to be kept still, for example after shoulder surgery or an injury, or after a cast is removed. It has two over-the-shoulder straps with a side buckle for adjustment, and a sling pouch for the hand and elbow.

Shoulder Wrap Brace (Neoprene)

A neoprene wrap gives compression and warmth and can be worn on either shoulder. It is used after surgery, with arthritis-related shoulder discomfort, or in rehabilitation. It does not hold the arm still the way a sling does.

Wearing a sling comfortably

  • Keep the forearm level or slightly raised, with the hand supported
  • Adjust the strap so the weight sits across the shoulders, not just on the neck
  • Move your fingers regularly unless told otherwise
  • Check the skin under the strap for redness

Call your doctor if

  • The hand or fingers swell, turn pale or blue, or feel numb
  • Pain gets worse
  • The skin under the strap is sore or broken

Sizing

The arm sling is sized from the elbow to the fingertips. The wrap is sized around the chest and upper arm. If you are not sure, message us before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sling and a swathe?

The sling supports the forearm and hand. The swathe is a body strap that holds the arm against the body to keep the shoulder still.

Which sling is used after shoulder surgery?

Your surgeon will say. A sling and swathe is often used when the shoulder must be kept still, but follow the instructions you were given.

What is the thumb loop on the Comfort Arm Sling for?

It helps prevent wrist drop by keeping the hand supported in the sling.

Can I use a shoulder wrap instead of a sling?

They do different jobs. A wrap gives compression and warmth but does not hold the arm still. Ask your doctor which you need.

How long should I wear a sling?

As long as your doctor or physiotherapist advises. Wearing a sling too long can stiffen the shoulder.
