How to measure yourself for a brace or support

By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 2 min read

A support only works if it fits. Too loose and it does nothing; too tight and it can cause numbness. Measuring takes a minute.

What you need

  • A soft tape measure, such as a tailor’s tape
  • Bare skin or thin clothing
  • A mirror or a helper for areas you cannot see

The basics

  • Stand or sit relaxed, as you will be when wearing the support
  • Keep the tape flat and level, not twisted
  • Snug, not tight: you should fit a finger under it
  • Measure twice and use the larger number if it differs

Where to measure

Support Measure
Knee Around the knee at the middle of the kneecap
Ankle Around the ankle at its narrowest point
Back or lumbar belt Around the waist where the belt will sit
Abdominal binder Around the abdomen at its widest point
Neck collar Around the neck
Elbow sleeve Around the arm just above the elbow
Arm sling From the elbow to the fingertips
Walker boot Foot length
Varicose vein stocking Calf at its widest point (and thigh for above-knee), in the morning

Between two sizes?

Message us on WhatsApp with your number and what you need the support for, and we will help you choose. The first size swap within 7 days is free.

Signs the size is wrong

  • Too tight: numbness, tingling, colour change, or marks that last
  • Too loose: the support slides, bunches or rolls over

If you notice numbness or colour change, take the support off and try the next size up.
