Wheelchair buying checklist
By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 2 min read
A wheelchair should fit the person and the places it will be used. This checklist covers what to look at before you buy.
1. Who and where
- Will it be used mostly at home, in a hospital, or both?
- Indoors only, or outdoors too?
- Will the person push it, or will a carer push it?
2. Weight and size
- Check the weight limit against the user’s weight
- The seat should leave a small gap, about two fingers’ width, on each side of the hips
- Seat depth should let the person sit back without the front edge pressing behind the knees
Humable’s Wheel Chair has a steel frame, nylon seat and rubber tyres. Message us for the exact seat width, overall width and weight limit.
3. Folding and transport
A foldable wheelchair is easier to store and to carry in a car boot. Check the folded size, and whether you can lift the weight.
4. Brakes
Reliable brakes keep the chair steady while someone gets in or out. Always apply them before a transfer.
5. Seat and comfort
A comfortable seat matters if the person sits for hours. A seat cushion can help.
6. Doors and space
Measure your doorways, lift and bathroom, and compare with the overall width of the chair.
7. Toileting
If the person also needs commode access, the Commode Wheel Chair has an integrated commode opening in the seat.
Safe use
- Apply the brakes before getting in or out
- Keep footrests clear when standing
- Do not overload the chair
