Bunion splint after surgery: what to know

By Humable Ortho Insights team · Last updated · 1 min read

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump at the base of the big toe, where the toe angles toward the others. Surgery can correct the angle, and afterwards many surgeons advise a splint to hold the toe in position while the foot recovers.

What the splint does

The Humable Bunion Splint (Neo) is designed for comfortable immobilisation and alignment of the big toe after bunion surgery. It is made of neoprene, nylon and plastic. The neoprene adds light cushioning and warmth.

Who it is for

People who have had bunion surgery and whose surgeon has advised a splint. It is not meant as something to try before surgery unless your doctor suggests it.

Using it safely

  • Wear it exactly as your surgeon instructs, including at night if advised
  • Keep the splint and your skin clean and dry
  • Check the toe often for colour, warmth and feeling
  • Ask your surgeon which footwear is suitable during recovery

Call your surgeon if

  • The toe becomes numb, cold, pale or blue
  • Pain or swelling increases
  • The wound has redness, discharge or an odour
  • You have a fever

Size

The splint is one size. If your foot is unusually wide or narrow, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.
